Three Fluid-Filled Systems Keep 4x4 Toyota Trucks Moving

Both the Tundra and Tacoma TRD Pro rely on a transfer case, front differential, and rear differential — each with its own fluid spec and wear profile. Neglecting any one leads to whine, shudder engaging 4WD, or accelerated wear on CV joints and axle shafts that costs far more to fix than a fluid service.

Fluid Spec and Service Interval

If you regularly wheel a Tacoma TRD Pro or tow through wet conditions in a Tundra, cut the standard interval roughly in half across all three components.

  • Transfer case: Toyota-specified gear oil per the fill plug label (typically 75W-90 GL-5)
  • Front differential: confirm spec on fill plug — may differ from transfer case
  • Rear differential: GL-5 hypoid gear oil; TRD Pro locking rear may specify a different grade
  • Inspect for water contamination after any deep crossing — milky fluid means immediate service

Rust and Corrosion Follow Water Into the Brakes Too
