Ford F-150 Oil Change Guide: Oil Type, Capacity & Interval

Why Oil Choice Matters More When You Tow

The F-150 lineup spans turbocharged EcoBoost V6s and the naturally aspirated 5.0L V8 — three very different oil demands under one nameplate. Turbocharged engines run hotter oil temperatures at the turbo bearings, while the 5.0L V8 has higher total oil volume and different wear characteristics.

Whichever engine you have, towing and heavy payload work accelerate oil breakdown well beyond what Ford's built-in oil life monitor assumes for a lightly loaded truck. Matching the right spec and a realistic interval protects the engine that's doing the pulling.

Oil Type and Capacity by Engine

Use 5W-30 full synthetic meeting Ford WSS-M2C946-B1 (or the spec listed on your oil cap) across EcoBoost and 5.0L applications.

  • 2.7L EcoBoost: ~6 quarts with filter
  • 3.5L EcoBoost: ~6 quarts with filter
  • 5.0L V8: ~8 quarts with filter
  • Always replace the filter — never reuse on a truck doing tow duty

Towing Changes the Interval Math

Ford's Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor factors driving conditions, but heavy trailer weight and hot-climate towing stress oil faster than the algorithm always reflects. If you regularly tow near the F-150's rated capacity, set a hard 5,000-mile ceiling regardless of what the dash says.

Pair Oil Service With a Brake Check

Every oil change is a convenient checkpoint to glance at pad thickness and rotor condition — especially on a truck that tows. Front pads on a loaded F-150 wear faster than most owners expect.
