Camaro ZL1 Differential Fluid Guide: MRC & Posi Service

The ZL1 Rear Diff Works Hard

650 lb-ft of torque through a limited-slip differential on launch puts enormous shear stress on gear oil. Track-used ZL1s that launch hard or run sticky tires wear diff fluid faster than the factory interval assumes.

Fluid Spec and Service Steps

Refer to the points below for specs, intervals, and service tips.

  • GM Dexron LS or equivalent limited-slip gear oil
  • Capacity approximately 1.1 quarts (verify in manual)
  • Replace fill plug crush washer; inspect drain plug magnet for metal
  • Chatter on tight turns often means wrong fluid or worn friction modifier

Track Prep: Diff and Brakes Together

Before a track day, check diff fluid level and condition alongside brake pad thickness and rotor runout. A ZL1 that launches hard and stops hard stresses both systems in the same session.

Diff Service Day Is Brake Check Day

GEOMET-coated rotors resist the same heat cycles your diff sees.
