Ram 2500 6.7L Cummins Fuel Filter & DEF Guide

Two Fluids the Cummins Cannot Run Without

Ram 2500 diesel trucks depend on clean fuel filtration and adequate Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) to run properly and stay emissions-compliant. Neglecting either causes real drivability problems, not just a warning light.

Fuel Filter Service

A clogged fuel filter shows up as hesitation, power loss under load, or hard starts — exactly when you don't want it, mid-tow.

  • Interval: roughly 15,000 miles, sooner with poor fuel quality
  • Watch for water-in-fuel warning — drain the water separator promptly
  • Always prime the system per Ram procedure after filter service
  • Use OEM or Mopar-spec filters — off-brand filtration can let contaminants through

DEF Fluid Basics

DEF is a urea-water solution injected into the exhaust stream to reduce NOx emissions on Cummins diesels. Use only DEF-rated fluid, keep the tank capped to avoid contamination, and refill well before the low-level warning to avoid a forced power reduction.
