Ram 1500/2500 4x4 Transfer Case & Front Differential Fluid Guide

Two Systems, Two Fluids, One Job

The Ram's 4x4 system relies on a transfer case and a front differential, each with its own fluid spec. Neglecting either leads to whine, shudder engaging 4WD, or accelerated wear on the front axle shafts and CV joints.

Fluid Spec and Service Interval

If you regularly tow through wet conditions or run trails, cut the standard interval roughly in half.

  • Transfer case: Mopar-specified fluid per the fill plug label
  • Front differential: synthetic gear oil per the axle code (confirm exact spec)
  • Inspect for water contamination after any deep crossing
  • Torque fill plugs to spec — over-tightening strips aluminum housings

Rust and Corrosion Follow Water Into the Brakes Too

Any truck that sees water crossings pushes the same moisture exposure onto rotors that it does onto diff housings. GEOMET-coated rotors resist the surface rust that untreated OEM rotors develop after repeated off-road use.

Off-Road Fluids and Coated Rotors

GEOMET-coated rotors resist corrosion from water crossings and mud.
