Ram 2500 Towing Prep Checklist

A Heavy Tow Deserves a Real Pre-Trip Check

Ram 2500 trucks are rated to pull loads that punish a brake, cooling, and tire system far more than daily unloaded driving. A five-minute checklist before a long haul catches problems while you're still in the driveway, not on a grade with a trailer behind you.

The Checklist

Do this walk-around every time you hook up for a trip over a few hundred miles or near your rated towing capacity.

  • Brake pad thickness and rotor condition — front and rear
  • Trailer brake controller output and gain setting
  • Coolant level, condition, and radiator/cooler airflow (clear debris)
  • Tire pressure on truck and trailer, checked cold
  • Hitch, ball, safety chains, and trailer wiring connections
  • Transmission fluid condition if towing near max rating

Brakes Take the Brunt of Every Descent

Downhill grades with a loaded trailer generate enormous heat at the rotors. Undersized or worn OEM components fade fastest exactly when you need maximum stopping power.
