Sway Bar Disconnect Is a Trail Tool, Not a Permanent Mod

The front sway bar limits body roll on pavement but restricts wheel articulation on trails. Rubicon and Mojave models get an electronic disconnect; Sport and Sahara owners often add manual quick-disconnects or aftermarket sway bar links. Either way, the disconnect is meant for low-speed trail use only — reconnect before highway driving.

Inspection and Service Points

A lifted Wrangler on 35s puts more leverage on every bushing and joint in the front end. Seasonal inspection catches wear before it becomes a trail-side breakdown.

  • Electronic disconnect: test function before every trail day; listen for motor whine or failure to reconnect
  • Manual disconnect: grease clevis pins; replace worn end links
  • Control arm and track bar bushings: inspect for cracking or separation
  • Ball joints: check for play with 35"+ tires — extra weight accelerates wear
  • Shocks: look for oil seepage at the shaft seal after repeated whoops or jumps

Suspension Travel and Brake Alignment Correlate

Excessive body roll from worn bushings or a stuck sway bar changes weight transfer under braking on descents. If your Wrangler pulls under hard trail braking, check suspension geometry and bushing condition alongside pad and rotor wear.
